Witness the private life of the world’s most beautiful animals.
You know exactly who they are. The ones who walk right past club lines, who get what they want before they ask for it. It’s a familiar cast: the centre of attention, the shameless flirt, the loudmouth, the narcissistic writer. You’ve seen them all. You’ve felt their Gucci-anointed aura. Laughing and dancing. Kissing the wrong people at the wrong time. Swaying to their own beat. Going out every night they’re sad. Finding solace in the crowd in a city paved with mildly good intentions and cocaine lines. A city of smooth talkers, armchair activists, and the rich brats of Instagram. A place to talk pop spirituality and purple prose in connoisseur-only jazz clubs.
The Bitter Pill Social Club takes a look at the lives of the Kochhar family, who find themselves drifting apart in the city of djinns, gins, and fake friends wrapped up in cigarette smoke. As one of their own gears up to tie the knot, three siblings come home to the neurotic parents who raised them. Meanwhile the parents face the family patriarch’s constant judgment. Divorce, disappointment, and disasters ensue as the entitled Kochhar brood dodges old lovers and marriage proposals.
Bookstore owner Kerry Emerson finally seems to be back in control of her life. Her failure of a marriage firmly in her rearview mirror and her recent business expansion a success, she is in charge of her own future. One that is looking better than ever.
The sight of the tall man, with the familiar salt and pepper goatee pushing open the door of her store, sets her hair on end. He doesn’t exactly bring good memories.
FBI Special Agent in Charge, Damian Gomez, is just looking for a decent cup of coffee when he walks into the small store offering books and brew. The pretty, feisty woman behind the counter is an unexpected surprise. Not at all unpleasant, especially since her finger that used to hold a wedding ring is now bare.
Her wild hair, boho style and silvery grey eyes suddenly hold a lot of promise. But when his office is pulled into an international investigation into the trafficking of rare books and manuscripts, the straight-laced SAC realizes he has to keep his distance from the woman who might well be involved.
Easier said than done, since fate seems determined to throw them together.
This is my first book by Freya Barker – yet it has definitely made me a fan of hers; because this one had the makings of a brilliant romance; romance that has slowly become my speed, my kind of romance to disappear into!
But before I get into the review; let me just say that I absolutely adored that this one was about an older couple, two characters who have lived their lives; made mistakes, learnt from them and have understood what it is that they want out of life, out of love and out of their partners.
This, I loved mostly because, I have come to realise that I have no patience for the immature decisions that most characters make; if not out of miscommunication, then out of jealousy – which is literally the worst decision that anyone could ever make.
Kerry is a divorced woman, out of a very unhappy; emotionally abusive marriage – and it was a traumatic incident that made her take charge of her life and now is content to be the owner of her own bookstore (already jealous of Kerry here!). relationships are definitely not on her radar, so she is stumped when not one, but two attractive men try and hit on her the same day, she knows that it won’t bring anything good. Especially considering that one of those attractive men is the FBI Agent who saved her life in the traumatic incident.
Damian is a workaholic FBI Agent who crosses paths with Kerry, a woman he saved a few years back; but he is surprised at the difference between the Kerry then and the Kerry now. He found the Kerry before then attractive, but the Kerry of now is irresistible. While he doesn’t do commitments, he still can’t help but find himself drawn to Kerry.
For both Damian and Kerry – the attraction and the connection between them is not only unwelcome but also unsolicited. But when a case keeps them on a path with each other, they slowly start to get used to the attraction to each other.
I have to say; this plot was such a refreshing change from the normal romantic suspense books – considering that the crime involved rare collection of books. Who knew that Rare editions of books would be the focus of murder and mystery? I LOVED IT!
Not to mention, both Damian and Kerry are strong, individualistic characters who are adorable together but also brilliant individually – which made getting them together all the more fun!
I can’t wait to see where Ms. Barker takes this series next!

Freya Barker loves writing about ordinary people with extraordinary stories.
Driven to make her books about ‘real’ people; with characters who are perhaps less than perfect, but just as deserving of romance, thrills and chills, and some hot, sizzling sex in their lives.
A recipient of the RomCon “Reader’s Choice” Award for best first book, “Slim To None”, and Finalist for the Kindle Book Award with “From Dust”, Freya has not slowed down.

The town of Glory is famous for two things: businesses that front for seedy, if not illegal, enterprises and the suicides that happen along the Indigo River. Marsden is desperate to escape the “bed-and-breakfast” where her mother works as a prostitute—and where her own fate has been decided—and she wants to give her little sister a better life. But escape means money, which leads Mars to skimming the bodies that show up along the Indigo River. It’s there that she runs into Jude, who has secrets of his own and whose brother’s suicide may be linked to Mars’s own sordid family history. As they grow closer, the two unearth secrets that could allow them to move forward . . . or chain them to the Indigo forever.
