He came home a hero and lost the only woman he’s ever loved…

John
I have no idea how to survive without my beloved Ava. She had no choice but to move on with her life during my six-year deployment and has now married Eric. I hate him for taking her from me. I’d prefer to wallow in my depression and heartbreak, but the whole damned world wants a piece of the SEAL Team leader who helped capture the world’s most-wanted terrorist. I need help handling the relentless requests, and when Ava sends her new sister-in-law to manage the media circus for me, I’m prepared to hate her on principle. Her brother took my Ava. What else do I need to know about her?

Julianne
It takes five seconds to realize Ava’s ex is going to be the most complicated and difficult client I’ve ever had, but the opportunity to represent the most celebrated man in the world could make my career. I’m determined to do the job, even if I dislike John from the moment I meet him. And I like everyone. So much so that my brothers worry about me being exploited by those who would take advantage of my unwavering love for others. But John… He’s in a class by himself, and his bitterness is a festering wound that I begin to wish I could somehow fix for him. The more time we spend together, the more our mutual disdain morphs into something that feels an awful lot like desire. There’s no way I can want this man, or so I tell myself, and when Eric finds out I’ve developed feelings for the man causing trouble in his new marriage, well…

That’s going to be a hot mess.

One Year Home by Marie Force is a Companion Novel to Five Years Gone – I haven’t read the first book; and I honestly do not plan to – because I have never been able to handle love triangles with the maturity they deserved to be handled with (I am a drama queen, what can I say!).

So if your tastes in romance run in the same direction as mine; then you don’t really have to read Five Years Gone to understand the plotline of One Year Home; though if its as well written as this emotional book, then you should definitely pick it up – if it doesn’t hit the hard limits in your reading preferences.

Navy Captain John West returned back home to a hero’s welcome after a five year deployment, vanquishing a feared terrorist, only to find out that the one woman he fell head over heels in love with, Ava, is lost to him. He logically knows that it isn’t Ava’s fault – for he left her without a word, or information for five years & he definitely lied to her for the whole duration of their relationship; but he just isn’t able to get over the fact that he has lost the only woman he loved, and who loved him in return.

Having to live with the fact that Ava has moved on, is now happily married to another man, Eric – he just wants to sink into oblivion – he has absolutely no interest in the overnight fame that he is subjected to after returning. He is bitter, acrimonious and hostile to the extreme extent and has no plans of changing. Not even for a Mary Poppinsesque woman sent to handle media requests at the behest of Ava.

Julianne Tilden adores her sister – in law, Ava ad though she knows the history between Ava and John, it doesn’t stop her from accepting her request to handle the out of control media requests on behalf of John. She knows she will be facing a hostile environment of work, but her empathy to what John has gone through gives a strong foundation on how to handle John himself, as well as the media enquiries on his behalf.

John and Julianne have quite the acrimonious relationship at start; even though John’s reluctance and rudeness is easy to understand, its not easy to handle, either for Julianne or for me as a reader.

But I absolutely adored how their feelings grew for each other, despite their reluctance nor their understanding of exactly how complicated it would be for them to move forward in this relationship.

One Year Home, has the exact amount of angst – it was neither overwhelming nor underwhelming to me as a reader; and it never ever took my attention away from the plotline – from exactly what John was going through; the struggle both Julianne and John went through in respect of their feelings for each other and the feelings that John had for Ava.

This was my first Marie Force romance; but I am quite intrigued with her writing style and the way she has handled the sensitive topics within this book. I am gonna keep my eye out for her future books, for she caters to a specific need in me as a romance reader; one that needs the perfect combination of emotions and plot to have an impact on me.
