Valkyries have one great responsibility: to return immortals to the afterlife by slaying them. As a Valkyrie, Malin has always known that the balance of the world rests on her ability to carry out orders. But when Malin discovers that her mother spared the life of an immortal who was destined to die, her world is thrown into chaos.
Malin not only wrestles with the knowledge that her mother might not be who she thought—she’s also thrust into the path of a gorgeous blue eyed guy named Asher who needs her help slaying the rogue immortal who destroyed his family. The balance of the world is at stake. And, as Asher competes with Malin’s ex for her love and loyalty, so is her heart.

I have been on a Norse Mythology kick for a while now – and this beauty, the first book in a young adult fantasy series is all about Valkyries instead of the normal vampires & werewolves – and hence, had me all excited about it.
Valkyries are not the normal subject for fantasy series – so I was quite excited for this one; especially considering that this will be my first Amanda Hocking book!
Starting off; the MC, Malin comes off as quite unlikeable – she is brash, rude and definitely one who hasn’t quite understood her own feelings, even for a teenager. But as the story moves forward; I could actually see the character growth in her, but while I was okay with he, I still wasn’t okay with her choices.
Here’s what I had an issue with – there is a bit of romantic triangle in the book and while most of the young adult fantasy books would have a bit of slow burn romance, even with all the romance triangles, it was not the same case here (no there isn’t any explicit scenes; but the intent is quite clear!) and is the main reason I have given the rating I did.
The writing is pretty darn brilliant – for I binge read this one within a day starting it! The plot is quite solid, even if it did become predictable at times; but it is strong and fast – paced but it was the ending that pretty much had me slack jawed! There is hope; that makes me want to get my hands on the next book immediately!
