ARC Review: Singe (Guardian Protection #1) by Aly Martinez

singe-final

She was my nightmare. Every time I closed my eyes, I watched her fall into that inferno. Over and over, I failed to save her.

I hadn’t been able to reach her, and the guilt only burned hotter over time. Four years later, I was the unreachable one.

Heroes aren’t always saints. Sometimes, we’re nothing more than jaded sinners driven by sleepless nights and hearts full of darkness.

And then I met her. She was a dreamer who managed to soothe my scars and heal my wounds.

But, as the flames closed in around us, I feared I wasn’t the right man to save her. That is until I realized she was the one woman I’d burn the world down to protect.

HOLY! MOLY! MOTHER! LOAD! I honestly can’t stop my heart from beating out of my chest! THIS WAS AN EXHILARATING ROLLER COASTER RIDE!! Aly Martinez did it again; and trust me this RIDE is EPIC! And you need to get on this sooner than later! 😀

Aly Martinez was one of my Top Favorite Authors of 2016 just because of her Retrieval Duet; but there is always that niggling sense that maybe she couldn’t top off the awesomeness of my favorite books, but I should have never doubted this author!

Singe is a story steeped in tragedy, redemption and a love that shouldn’t make sense but does, and does so beautifully and wondrously!

Jude was an ex-cop; who lost his job due to one tragedy that put him on course to a life that isn’t exactly fulfilled, but he still lives it for his step-daughter. Plagued by nightmares about a tragedy that he can’t get past.

I absolutely adored him; honestly there was always a bit of back and forth; but I could totally get on his “tortured soul” horse, and pretty enjoyed the heck out of this ride as well! He was not only compassionate, but also loyal and pretty much, well, perfect!!

Rhion is a closeted author; meaning she hasn’t published any of her works and believes she never well. She is gregarious, quirky yet introverted; I know – Quite the weird combination, right? But she works it, and boy does she work it! She wormed her way through under my skin in a way that I never actually minded it – she was, I believe, because of her past a woman who had a spine of steel, just never a confidence in herself to actually believe it.

“You…ah…want some coffee?” I asked.

He laughed. “Does it come with a lobotomy?”

“What? And ruin that pretty face?” I teased, pressing brew on the coffee maker.

Okay. Fine.

I wasn’t teasing. I was flirting. Straight up.

With an extremely inebriated man. But, if I couldn’t flirt with the man of my dreams and the star of every fantasy I’d ever had since I’d first laid eyes on him, who could I flirt with?

Told in Dual POV (which is awesome btw!), The story volleys between past and present, but amazingly, there was never any disconnect that I felt while reading the book! Ms. Martinez has introduced some amazing characters in this new series (and re-introduced some from her old ones, apparently – I will have to check them out soon!); and I honestly am so excited to see where this series goes; preferably with the hints we have already gotten 😀

The plot line hooked me right in from the start, and I couldn’t let go even though it was late into the night and I needed my beauty sleep (for my upcoming wedding!) BUT WHO CARES? I GOT TO READ JUDE AND RHION’s story in an early eARC and this one was worth the raccoon eyes I had the next morning (and probably will at the wedding!). BUT NO REGRETS AT ALL!

First 5 Star Recommendation of 2017 and it couldn’t have been for a better book! ❤

Cheers, Pavi
