One story. Two couples.
I fell in love with a man who didn’t exist.
What started out as romance ended in hell.
His words turned to razor blades.
His kisses converted to fists.
His embrace became my cage.
His body transformed into a weapon, stealing parts of me until ultimately….
I broke.
I hated him.
My sole job in life became to protect our daughter.
I wasn’t sure I’d ever escape the prison he’d skillfully crafted from my fears.
Until the day our savior arrived.
This is the story of how I escaped the man who thought he owned me.
The transfer of my life and my family.
CAUTION: This is the Conclusion to Retrieval Duet. You NEED to read Retrieval before you pick this one up or even read this review – as there will be spoilers!!
Retrieval: Part One (Read My Review!) broke my heart – not only for those awesomely ah-mazing characters but also for the intricate plot-line that freaking blew my head away – I should know, I was in such a freaking book hangover after being done with part one, that never went away till I got my hands on this conclusion.
This was everything and I do mean EVERYTHING to me – I fell in love Aly’s writing style with this duet; I fell for the heroes that she has so lovingly shared with her readers, but most of all I fell in love with the strength that a woman possesses; that she doesn’t know she possesses until she is required to – strength and courage she isn’t aware that she even need. I FLOVED this duology – one word for it: PERFECTION and definitely TOP RECOMMENDATION of 2016! ❤
IF YOU HAVEN’T READ RETRIEVAL; PLEASE DO NOT GO BEYOND THIS POINT!
(although I will try to make the review s spoiler free as possible.)
Heath Light aka Luke was the undercover DEA agent; sent in as Clare Noir’s physical trainer. It took time but he actually ended up being a man that Clare could trust; it ended up being even more for him.
Clare Noir, on the other hand, isn’t thrilled to know that the man she had come to trust, to like in her nightmare of a life was based on a lie. But she has better things to worry about, like the man whom she believes will never let her go and her daughter’s parentage.
“I don’t really believe in wishes, but somehow, I’ve found myself in a situation where a silly wish is all I have left. If I’m lucky enough to catch 11:11 again tomorrow, it means we’ve survived another day.”
There is angst, there is drama, there are revelations that will blow you away; but at the core of this book is definitely love – love between two human beings, a love that becomes their safe anchor and the love for a daughter that brings two amazingly different couples to become a family! This love breaks you, but it also brings you back together, stronger than ever before. A love that ends up warming you from inside out; like a hug that never ends.
Aly Martinez knows how to write heroes! I mean, first Roman, now Heath – she literally had me salivating for the hot bossy protective and possessive heroes she introduced me to! If I hadn’t been sure, I would have honestly believed that Heath and Roman were brothers – the soul sharing, completing each other’s sentences kind of brothers. *sighs dreamily*
“I don’t want to be your Luke. Not anymore. I’m Heath. I’ve always been Heath. I’ll always be Heath. But, regardless of what my name is, I’m not going anywhere.”
Not until you’re ready anyway. I ignored the stabbing pain in my chest.
Her lashes fluttered as her eyes closed just before she rested her forehead on my chest. “Why?”
Because I wouldn’t be able to breathe without knowing you’re safe.
Because I’m drawn to you in ways that would ruin us both.
Because it’s irrational, illogical, and so fucked up that I feel like I’m going insane, but I can’t stop feeling like you and Tessa are mine.
Heath had fallen for Clare and Tessa, pretty much from the beginning – and even his attempts to actually try and keep himself away from Clare, not physically but emotionally are rendered a moot point for him – not when Clare needs him.
Clare, on the other hand, just had her life turned upside down and is now being shown a way to live her life with her daughter – and the fact that she has to share them with Roman and Elisabeth; two people who have also been caught in her husband’s web of lies.
“What do you need, Clare?” he murmured the same way he had so many times over the last week.
My answer was always the same. “You.”
“Then get over here and take it,” he replied as usual.
It was an offer I never refused.
Through all the revelations, drama and life – threatening situations; Heath & Clare as well as Roman and Elisabeth weave their own brand of happiness.
Heath was absolutely perfect – loyal to the point of infinity, he instinctively knew exactly what Clare needed and when. Clare, on the other hand, was this strong beautiful woman, who did not let her nightmare stop her from clawing her way to happiness.
“That’s how you balance the scales, Clare. You open that sexy mouth and use it to tell me about yourself. I don’t need favors. I need you.”
Oh. My. God.
Heath’s blanket of warmth didn’t just wrap around me.
It enveloped me.
Head to toe.
Mind and soul.
But the best part about this book? It was the connection that Elisabeth and Clare shared that brought tears to my eyes (not gonna lie: I bawled my eyes out; the first time they met!). You have two woman who have been intertwined in a way that no two humans, let alone two mothers should ever be! Yet, you have them trying to make the best of their situation in only the way they can; together!
THIS DUET NEEDS TO BE READ – I promise you, you will fall head over heels for everything in this book – from the plot to the characters to the brilliant writing? EVERYTHING WAS JUST FREAKING PERFECT! ❤ ❤
Note: There is no love triangle. There is no cheating. There is just two alpha males possessing & protecting their soul mates!
