J.C. Valentine has written some of the grittiest romances I have had the pleasure of reading, yet the blurb intimated that this somewhat of a cleaner romance 😉 So I knew I had to absolutely check it out! 😀
And I am so glad that I did.
Terri aka Terry Cunningham is a woman trying to start over – she is a woman battered by her husband and is slowly trying to regroup herself. She has a job now, and while it may not have been the best job around; it gives her independence and definitely provides her with enough support to help her back on her feet.
Luke Reed is Terri’s boos – and he is also one swoony alpha male. He takes care of his girls, is loyal and definitely jumped in with both feet, when Terri needed his help.
This one was quite a bit different from other books that I had read, because for one we have a POV of the husband, Randy; so for one I had a holistic view of what was happening all around and that honestly felt absolutely amazing!
Terri and Luke, had this connection with each other; first as employer and employee, where it is easy to see that protective nature of Luke towards Teri as an employee. But it is when they start getting a little closer to each other, with a foundation in friendship and then slowly falling for each other – that connection grows into something a whole lot deeper and it was a treat to see them together!
There is intense, gritty feeling to this romance – mostly because you see both sides of the coin and all you can keep doing is bit your nails, become anxious, for you “know” that villain holds all the cards in this game of chess, and you somehow aren’t able to get that point across to the hero and the heroine – and trust me, shaking or screaming at your e-reader doesn’t really work *sighs*
My only grip was with the rushing of the climax and the abrupt end to their romance, it would have been given a better closure if I had been given an epilogue to close of their HEA.
Yet, I still enjoyed this romance, for it had the quintessential Valentine writing style – which has in recent times become one of my favorites!
