My name is Roman Cavenaugh and I’m kind of an asshole.
Running a company isn’t easy, especially when everyone expects you to fail, so being a jerk? It comes with the territory.
I don’t have time to mess around, and I sure as hell didn’t see her coming.
Cara Hamilton—she was supposed to be off limits…a temporary employee brought in during my assistant’s maternity leave.
But, in the blink of an eye, she became so much more.
An obsession I couldn’t shake.
So yeah, I may be an asshole, but now, I finally had a purpose, and soon, she would be mine.
All’s fair in love and war…
This is my first book by J.L. Berg and I don’t even know why I haven’t already read her works before!! This was such an amazing mixture of angst, cockiness, humor and some amazing chemistry between two brilliant, intelligent and definitely “made for each other” characters!!
Roman Cavenaugh is the head of his own division of a company, but from the prologue, he had my pity and sympathy! I know! I know a proud man like Roman would never ever accept anyone’s sympathy or pity, let alone mine, but that just made me love him all the more! He comes off like a jerk to anyone who crosses him, but then again, he has had to build a strong wall around himself, so he would never get close to anyone – yeah like that ever works. He has strict rules that he adheres to, and even though he actually has a reputation of a playboy, he really doesn’t have that many hook-ups like everyone would actually believe.
Cara Hamilton is a temporary assistant that Roman’s company provided him with, when his actual assistant went on maternity leave. Cara is a small town girl, she loves being in the city and living with her boyfriend or so she believes. When she starts getting closer to the Jerky CEO, she starts to see beneath his assholish exterior to the man underneath, and that man sweeps her off her feet!
Roman and Cara, have to be hands down one of my favourite couples of this year! Really! Not only does their connection stand out with every conversation they have, it is the kind connection I adored reading about – the no-holds bar openness they achieved with each other left me with the kind of warmth that only soft hugs and cuddles from my guy give me!
This isn’t just a romance really – what we have is an immense character growth throughout the course of the book – sure, the blurb makes it sound like the cliché “jerky boss falls for sweet secretary” but it is the complexity of characters that made it seem so much more! It was a journey that I absolutely adored being on with both of them, individually and together!
I also loved seeing the glimpses of Roman with his brother Jude and his family – a brother that he believes he is in competition with! The kind of familial relationship these siblings had with each other, no matter what their perceptions might have been about each other, it was so endearing to watch them get closer to each other again.
I also believe, Jude had his story in The Walls Duet – Within The Walls and Beyond These Walls(which I have already bought and I am gonna read soon!), but while this is a companion novel to the Duet, it can be read as standalone. And it is a standalone that you definitely need to read! 😀
