Someone wants Captain Admiral Zander Graydon dead. Like yesterday. Zander’s convinced his attractive assistant knows more than she’s willing to say, and if he can stop running long enough, he’ll find out exactly what she’s hiding. Lieutenant Marshal Mae Petros is determined to keep her CO safe. Before she tips her hand, however, Mae has to figure out if the alluring man she’s protecting is the real Captain Admiral Graydon. Or an alien shape-shifting imposter.
On the run and no one to trust…not even each other.
Captain Admiral Zander Graydon has seen a lot of action, but almost getting killed three times in one day is pushing it. Only the company of his new assistant, Lieutenant Marshal Mae Petros, makes things a little easier to swallow. Except the delectable Lieutenant Marshal Petros is hiding a number of secrets, and her presence might have something to do with the continued attempts on his life.
It’s no accident Lieutenant Marshal Mae Petros finds herself in the firing line alongside the charming but very off-limits Captain Admiral Graydon. She’s taken the job as the admiral’s assistant to determine if a shape-shifting alien has killed the CO and assumed his form. Whether the admiral is human or not, Mae finds herself getting way too close to him as they run for their lives.
Military to the core, Mae and Zander will have to overcome their suspicions of each other to work together, when they realize the fate of the entire universe is at stake.
Disclaimer: This is the second book in the Atrophy series, but can be read as Standalone – though it would give a better background, if you have read the first one. I didn’t.
This was such an intense futuristic romance that had me gasping for breath at every turn, for it had plot full of action, strong characters and a plethora of secondary characters that made reading of this book a three-dimensional experience!
Captain Admiral Zander Gayson is a decorated hero, who isn’t exactly having a good day – considering that he is being hunted, though he doesn’t really know why! Lieutenant Marshal Mae Petros, on the other hand, just started the job as Graydon’s assistant – a job that came as a favour to her friend, Rian Sherron’s request for he believes that Graydon has been taken over by one of a shape shifting alien race that is slowly fighting a war that humans don’t even know that is being fought!
Now, “Quantum” lays bare to a larger than life plot – a plot that would be better explained if one reads “Atrophy” first – but lucky for first time readers, there are explanations in this one – but while the focus is on Graydon and Mae and their relationship, there was honestly a whole lot of story arc that was going on in background and a whole lot of secondary characters, foundation for upcoming books.
But even with such a rich plot, it was absolutely wonderful to see that the author never actually lost sight of the plot – and the direction the characters were taking! And as a series, I also loved that the kind of mystery and the action she showed as part of Graydon and Mae’s relationship wasn’t the only thing that was the focus of this book – a war was waging and there were a lot more contenders to this war than just two people – and honestly that was the actual show stealer.
That is not to say, that I did not enjoy the banter between Graydon and Mae – the humor and the chemistry between these two provided the much needed lightness to a plot that could have gone quite heavy, especially with all the mistrust and misunderstandings prevailing in the characters!
Now this review would absolutely be incomplete without the mention of Rian Sherron – the anti-hero of this book and one who is larger than life and definitely makes you more interested in his story than the current H&H! Especially with that little happenstance between Rian and the woman, Ella who definitely gets on his nerve! 😉
The author does a wonderful job of actually keeping the interest in this series, not just in this one but beyond this book – for the rest of the series as well!
