Harley
All of her life, Cadence “Cade” Williams has been lied to…
With her ailing father on his deathbed, a whispered secret sends Cadence’s life into a tailspin. Determined to either confirm or debunk her father’s claim, she sets out on a mission to grow close to the only man with evidence to set things straight. To do that, Cadence earns a position in an elite security firm owned by her father’s old army buddy, Noah “Mac” Mackinley.
Mac is the only man who could hold the evidence to support her father’s claims…
But first, she must prove herself worthy of Mac’s trust and get close enough to find the truth. Her first mission is to watch over an eight-year old girl, Harley Clark.
Harley is not an ordinary girl. She’s the daughter of a rock star…
Despite her fragile appearance, Harley has tenacity and brilliance like nothing Cade has ever seen. To everyone’s surprise—including her own—Cade forms an unlikely friendship with the beautiful wallflower.
Her first assignment just became more interesting…
When Harley’s rock star father, Jax Clark, enters the scene, Cade can’t deny the instant attraction for the self-proclaimed bad boy. Tattoos, piercing eyes, and a raspy voice that sends thousands of fans into a screaming frenzy, he’s more than just a heartthrob. Worse, Jax starts to pay her more attention than she expects.
She’s faced with a choice—get lured in by the celebrity world and lose any chance of finding out the truth, or stick to the plan and avoid Jax at all costs to earn Mac’s trust.

Listen to what Michelle had to say on the concept of Alpha Bad Boy Heroes with a Heart Gold: An Overused Concept?

With the growth of Young Adult and New Adult romances, there certainly has been an influx of Alpha bad boys with a heart of gold. And as the demand for paranormal adult, and sci-fi romance increases, we will most likely see a slew of (hopefully diverse) strong, dominant Alphas.  This is not a new trope.  We’ve been reading about them for years, and, in my humble opinion, we will see a lot more of them.  The romance genre may have too many of them, but let’s discuss why:

Alpha males are fun, hands down.  But Alpha males with Beta tendencies are more swoon-worthy.   They’re the ones who may not talk openly about their feelings and emotions, but they make us feel safe, loved and valued.

It’s easy to be attracted to the chest-thumping man’s man with toned pectorals, thick, muscular thighs and fabulous hair.  Because let’s face it, women want partners who are, sexy, and, more importantly, capable of protecting them.  But without that heart of gold, he’s just a complete jerk.  Douche-like behaviours are not attractive.  And when the heroes display these traits, we tend to loathe them.  We, as readers, are the first to scream at the heroine if she’s falling for a volatile, possessive, often-jealous jerk.

Women also like to be challenged.  When paired with our innate trait to want to care for and comfort others, the Alpha jaded male just calls to us.  The heroines we relate to are the same way.   We want her to “fix” her love interest, to help him become a better man that we all know he is.  Why?  Because that’s the type of guy she deserves, and deep down, he is all heart.  This makes our Alpha redeemable.

In my debut novel, Harley, Jax Clark is a hot-to-trot, rock star.  He’s an Alpha–complete with a sexy swagger, tattoos and gorgeous hair–who can get any woman he wants…That is until he meets and hires a female bodyguard, Cadence “Cade” Williams, to watch over his eight-year-old daughter, Harley Clark.

Despite the instant attraction Cade feels towards Jax, she distances herself from him for various reasons.  For one thing, she thinks he’s just another sex-crazed rock star who wants to cop out of his fatherly responsibilities and pass the buck to a complete stranger.  She thinks he’s an Alpha douche.  But Jax is nothing like that.  He wants to do things right.  However, he is clueless when it comes to being a good father.  Right in the core of him is a good man.

So, yes, the Alpha with a golden heart may have a lot of representations, particularly in the Romance genre, but we can’t help but fall for them and turn them into our next book boyfriend.  We root for them.   We wish their relationships with their heroines strive on forever.  And most of all, we hope that we find a guy just like them in real life.
