Sure to thrill readers of Stephen King, Joe Hill, and Dean Koontz—William Todd Rose’s new dark horror novella is a tale of bloody retribution that blurs the line between the waking world and the terrors of the night.

There’s only one thing standing between humanity and the dark forces of the supernatural: the secret agency known as The Institute. The organization depends on regular guys like Chuck, a Level I Recon and Enforcement Technician who guides tormented spirits into the next life.

From an office deep underground, Chuck projects his spirit into Crossfades, monstrous realms where the souls of the dead, unable to move on due to fear or anger, devise macabre tortures for themselves and one another. He’s always been able to leave his work behind at the end of the day . . . until now.

First in dreams, then in waking nightmares, Crossfades are bleeding into the physical world. And now it’s up to Chuck—along with his partner, a woman named Control—to put a stop to it. Because there’s no telling what might come over from the other side.

Review

I received an eARC of the book via TLC Book Tours in exchange for an honest review.

Disclaimer: This is a sequel novella to Crossfades by William Todd Rose. There might be spoilers in this review.

If you remember my review of Crossfades, you would know that I absolutely loved the book! It’s concept was brilliant and innovative. And that this was a sequel (even as a novella!) was quite exciting to me! I was so pumped up to read this instalment, but was also a tad disappointed.

We again meet up with Chuck, who is still doing his job of helping lost souls find their way by traveling to the astral realm where the souls of dead people are sometimes stuck. Now he meets with a soul that he has known before but it definitely is NOT a good thing!

This novella started of great – which could have been partly due to my excitement, but mostly cause I do love Rose’s writing style!! But through the middle till almost the end, it couldn’t hold my interest – there were too many characters introduced and Chuck, who is supposed to be the hero and the protagonist seems to be overwhelmed by them!

The horror aspect that I loved in the first book, sadly became weaker, or maybe couldn’t hold up against everything that was happening!

But the biggest disappointment was the ending! It even took me a while to understand that book itself had ended – there was nothing remotely explosive about it!

On the other hand, I still love Rose’s writing style and just for that I stuck with the book till the end – because there was so much potential, definitely interesting enough to know where the plot could have lead even if it did not go the way it could have (AM I EVEN MAKING SENSE?).

Recommendation

This was the sequel to Crossfades, and while I am sure you would have loved that, only read this book if you like closure. It’s an okay addition to a Brilliant First Book!
